The Community Policing Unit of the Gambia Police Force (GPF), in collaboration with the GIZ Police Programme, is currently conducting a week-long engagement to develop a comprehensive Community Policing Strategy for the GPF. Their latest stop was in the Central River Region (CRR).
The team, led by Police Regional Commissioner Omar Darboe, was received by the Deputy Governor of CRR on behalf of the Governor. The team explained to the regional leadership the importance of community and stakeholder involvement in shaping an inclusive strategy.
Deputy Commissioner Lamin Jaiteh, head of the Community Policing Unit, also emphasized the significance of local contributions to the strategy.
Retired Commissioner Babucarr Sowe, a consultant with GIZ, stated that the previous strategy’s implementation period has ended, and the team is now consulting with community members to gather input for the 2025-2029 Strategic Implementation Plan for security and community policing.
Speaking on behalf of the GIZ Police Programme, Junior Security Sector Adviser Fatou Sanno highlighted GIZ’s ongoing support to the GPF. This includes initiatives related to Community Policing, Human Rights, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), and the construction of modern police stations across the country.
