NPP losing weight in Gambia, says councillorship aspirant

Ali Jaw

Farafenni councillorship aspirant Bakary S.S. Jadama has said the National People’s Party (NPP) has lost weight in Gambian politics, in particular the rural areas, considering the outcome of the President Barrow’s recent Meet the People Tour.

He describes the tour as a slap in the face, which he hopes NPP would learn a good lesson from.

Known to many as Bakaba Jadama, he previously vied in the 2017 National Assembly elections to represent Illiyassa constituency but lost the seat to opponent Dembo Camara.

Mr Jadama wishes to contest in the upcoming councillorship elections for Farafenni ward under the banner of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

He is also the founder and coordinator of Partnership for Community and Environmental Development (PCED), an advocacy group.

“The recently-concluded Meet the People Tour was married to a lot of confusion in-between the leadership and campaign management of the NPP camp. If one could closely assess their respective meeting avenues during the period of the tour, you would come to notice that the NPP has lost weight in Gambia politics, especially in rural Gambia,” Mr Jadama said.

“A majority of the Gambian populace distanced themselves from attending his Meet the People Tour. And President Barrow avoided having meetings in big towns and decided to hold meetings at the outskirts of relatively small villages.”

The aspiring politician said the reason for his comments is that the NPP and its members keep on making promises without fulfilling them.
