Darboe Says Flag Bearer Issue Is Fueled By UDP’s Adversaries

By Buba Gagigo

Ousainu Darboe, the Secretary General and Party Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has pointed fingers at adversaries for stirring up the flag-bearer controversy within the party.

“Our adversaries are behind this entire debacle; no youth within the UDP has expressed a desire to become the flag bearer. It’s our opponents who are orchestrating these issues, and their claims are baseless. We must recognize this. Their LRR chairman has publicly stated that for the UDP to triumph, a younger nominee other than Darboe should be chosen. This assertion stems from their awareness that Darboe is their main obstacle, and their path would be easier if he were not in the running,” stated Darboe.

He continued, “I have consistently worked for the benefit of the youth and have never intended to hold onto my position indefinitely. I am dedicated to paving the way for the next generation, yet no young member has stepped forward to seek this role.”

Darboe also called on his followers to welcome non-members into the party and cautioned against any hostility towards new members.

“As it stands, I will remain the UDP leader until 2026, barring any unforeseen circumstances such as death or illness. My leadership will persist until then, and even in 2026, a congress to determine the next candidate will only be convened post-election. When the appropriate time arrives, those interested may submit their candidacy, and the National Executive will make the final decision,” Darboe said.
