60% of Gamcel to be put up for sale, says Gov’t

Lamin Queen Jammeh, the country’s Minister for Information, has revealed that the government has given the green light to sell 60% of Gamcel, the national mobile operator, to the private sector.

Minister Jammeh made this statement to GRTS recently, saying: “The government has given the green light to sell a majority stake of Gamcel to private investors.”

The Cabinet, Minister Jammeh added, has also approved the splitting of GAMTEL, the national fixed-line operator, into two separate entities for wholesale and retail services.

“The Transfer of Gamtel to Gambia Fibre Company Limited has been endorsed, along with the tender process for privatising and disposing of 60% of Gamcel’s shares,” he explained, saying: “These decisions were made to address the serious financial and operational difficulties faced by GAMTEL/Gamcel and ensure its sustainability."
