Minister Of Agriculture Unveils Plans To Procure 180 Tractors For The Farming Community

Hon. Demba Sabally, the Minister of Agriculture, has disclosed the government’s intention to obtain approximately 180 tractors to support farmers in the Gambia.

Acknowledging the current shortage of tractors for farmers, Sabally outlined the existing inventory, indicating that there are fifty tractors, with 20 allocated specifically for rice cultivation in CRR South. The remaining thirty tractors have been distributed across other regions. Recognizing the insufficiency, the Minister highlighted the inclusion of procuring 180 tractors in the 2024 budget.

“Yes, we acknowledge the insufficiency of tractors for the farmers. Currently, we have a total of fifty tractors, with 20 specifically allocated to CRR South for rice cultivation. The remaining thirty tractors have been distributed to various regions across the country. Recognizing the inadequacy of the current fleet, our 2024 budget includes provisions for acquiring approximately one hundred and eighty (180) additional tractors. A cabinet paper is in progress to facilitate the approval process for procurement, aiming to address the shortage. While we understand that this new fleet may not fully meet all demands, it will significantly contribute to alleviating the current challenges. Importantly, the proposed number exceeds the number of tractors previously confiscated by the Janneh Commission from farmers. The distribution of these tractors is expected to play a crucial role in reducing the labour burden faced by women,” he explained. Minister of Agriculture, Demba Sabally, shared these insights during an interview on Kerr Fatou’s weekly show, ‘Kutubung Daala,’ last Sunday.
