The Deputy Police PRO Modou Musa Sissawo has said that people found wanting of violation of OperationClear the Road Principles will face Justice.
The Gambia police force have launched road clearing operation last month and wrapped the entire country as part of development and safety. The main aim is geared towards widening the roads and facilitates the free flow of traffic for vehicles as well as safeguard public safety.
However, some people have violated the rules based on various reasons and that led to their arrest
The Deputy PRO confirmed to this medium that over hundreds of people have been arrested by the police for violating the rules attached to the Operation Clear the Road.
“The first batch arrested is more than hundred. Some were advised and released, and others taken to court. The second batch is also about hundreds of them. We are currently trying to proceed with their case to the courts may be next week.”
He stated that most of the people arrested are not under police custody as many of them were released on bail.
However, The Deputy PRO has debunked the statement regarding the payment of D7000 claimed to be paid to the police when arrest describing as false.
“The statement is false. No police station receives any payment from individuals. Only vehicles found causing obstruction or left packed at dangerous positions pay a spot fine ranging from D1000, D1500 to 2500,” Deputy PRO explained. He added: “These monies are paid to the central government.”
