Gov’t Rescinds Decision To Send Students To FarabaCampus ‘Willy-Nilly’

By Mo modou Justice Darboe

The Government of The Gambia has backpedaled its earlier decision to send students to the UTG FarabaBanta campus, The Voice has gathered.

According to informed sources, an internal memo on Monday evening circulated among lecturers, professors, and other cadres of the UTG teaching staff, informing them that the decision to relocate to Farabahas been set aside.

The Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Pierre Gomez, had been adamant that students must relocate to FarabaBanta campus lock, stock, and barrel as the beginning of the semester neared. Lectures were scheduled to begin on 11 September 2023 but were apparently delayed.

Prof. Gomez said the UTG Faraba Banta Campus had been in the works for several years, hinting that it was about time the long wait for transfer of students therewas over.

However, both the staff and student associations were up in arms about the decision. They vociferously complained that the new campus lacked basic amenities such as water and electricity. The associations also said the move to Faraba Banta will present new sets of challenges to students such as logistical and security nightmares.

This medium has learned though that the government’sdecision to relocate students to Faraba was rescinded last Monday.
